Kitchen Range

In 2011, Freeland Rees Roberts was commissioned to oversee the refurbishment of the kitchen range, primarily to resolve Environmental Health concerns, but also to remove insensitive modern interventions and improve access into and around the kitchen range. Careful conservation and cleaning of stonework, repairs to medieval timber floor joists and roof members, replacement of modern tiles with Cotswold stone slates on the main kitchen roof and the reinstatement of the timber framed west wall of the kitchen all formed the major repair element of the substantial refurbishment of the range.

Extensive archaeological excavations in the 14th century kitchen and adjacent to the medieval city wall with its Saxon ramparts, together with dendrochronological investigations of oak floor beams and roof members have enabled a new understanding of the early history of the College.
